National Parks Road Trip & Alaska Sea/Land Cruise - April-June 2015
Gateway Arch, St. Louis, MO
On our way to Branson, MO we spent a night on the road in Cahokia, IL. We noticed that where we were staying was really close to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO. We ordered tickets on line for the morning of the day we planned on arriving in Branson.
We were on the first tram trip to the top of the arch, several members of the U.S. Army were on the same trip. When we were at the top the soldiers formed a half circle around two of them that were unfolding a flag. When they finished unfolding it they held it up so it hung between them, then one of the others swore in several of the soldiers in the group. After they finished the swearing in ceremony they folded the flag. We asked if they were new recruits and were informed they had re-enlisted.
What they refer to as a tram is a series of 5-seat pods that look like they came out of a 60's SF movie. The door to enter the pod is 4 feet tall and the inside is not a lot taller.
At the top there are small windows that look over the city on one side and the Mississippi River and Illinois on the other side.
After we came back down we viewed a video about the planning and building of the arch. It is a fascinating video that had most of the audience applauding at the end.
