Riverboat Cruise & Road Trip - March-April 2014
Loretta Lynn's Ranch
As we drove from Nashville to Memphis Dale noticed signs for Loretta Lynn's Kitchen & Ranch. Just off the highway was Loretta Lynn's Kitchen where we had lunch. It was nothing to write home about.
We continued on down the road about 7 miles to Loretta Lynn's Ranch, Western Town, and Museum. The guided tour brings you through:
- an exact replica of the house in Butcher Holler, KY where Loretta was born and lived until she married. The replica was used in the movie Coal Miner's Daughter.
- a replica of the coal mine in which Loretta's dad worked. They were paid in script that could only be used at the company store, thus they worked for the necessities of life as their pay never covered what they needed to live so they were always in debt to the company.
- the ranch house where Loretta lived for a good portion of her life. She now lives in a small one story house in back of the original ranch house.
The cost of the tour includes a visit to the museum. The museum is different from most celebrity museums in that though it contains a lot of information about Loretta there is a lot more information about other people in her life, a huge tribute to Conway Twitty, and a large collection of autographed pictures, posters, and other memorabilia that she collected as a fan of other celebrities.
An interesting fact that we learned was that Loretta saw the original ranch house and told her husband Mooney to do what ever he had to do to get her the house while she was on tour. When she returned she was happy to learn that he had gotten her the house, but was also peeved that he had bought the whole town to get it.
Loretta was born April 14, 1932. At the time we visited the ranch, she was 82 and still doing shows every other weekend traveling as far as Canada to do shows. She also did performances at the dude ranch that is part of the property she owns.
